Ross Wilkerson and his wife, Misty, built a life of adventure, strong family values, and community appreciation. They met in 2005 while working at Les Schwab Tires in Redding, California. Eighteen years of marriage later, they have three children: Ryder (15), Talon (11), and Jordyn (7).
Born and raised in Redding, Ross moved to Vacaville, California in 2020 for a management promotion, then to Boise, Idaho. In 2024, he had the opportunity to run his own Les Schwab Tire Center, and Mitchell, South Dakota, stood out as the perfect place. With options across several states, Mitchell’s charm and strong sense of community made it their top choice. Plus, who could resist The World’s Only Corn Palace?
In March 2024, Ross and Misty visited Mitchell for a house-hunting trip. From their first drive down Main Street, they knew they had made the right choice. After selecting a home, they returned to Boise to pack up. Their journey to Mitchell included sightseeing stops, with a final memorable visit to Mount Rushmore before arriving.
For Ross, the best part of Mitchell is its people. Having lived in multiple places, he has never encountered a community as kind and welcoming. The warmth and support from locals made their transition seamless.
The Wilkersons have embraced local events, including the Pre-Sturgis Party, First Fridays on Main, and Chamber newcomer events. They even attended a City Council meeting, appreciating the mayor’s transparency and involvement.
Their neighborhood was an unexpected delight. Unlike their previous homes, Mitchell’s open yards made meeting neighbors effortless. Their kids quickly made friends, and the generosity of housewarming gifts set the tone for a close-knit community.
The Wilkersons enjoy hiking, shooting, swimming, and being outside. While they once explored mountain landscapes, they now embrace the unique scenery and history of South Dakota.
Ross is the Manager of Les Schwab Tire Center in Mitchell, marking 20 years with the company. His career not only introduced him to Misty but also shaped his values in business and community. Meanwhile, Misty has homeschooled their children since 2020, providing stability despite frequent moves.
Ross and his family love dining at Puerto Vallarta Bar and Grill and visiting the iconic Corn Palace. Their most memorable experience so far has been the Pre-Sturgis Party, which showcased Mitchell’s welcoming spirit.
Ross encourages newcomers to embrace Mitchell’s welcoming nature. "Come here knowing you’ll be treated like you belong. People here are the nicest, most genuine, and honest I’ve ever met."
The Wilkersons have found their home in Mitchell, where friendly faces, community events, and strong connections make it special. While Ross may miss mountain landscapes, he wouldn’t trade the sense of belonging Mitchell has given him.
