This position performs technical duties in the repair and maintenance of the city library.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Library Director assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include building codes, electrical codes, plumbing codes, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

MAJOR DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Coordinates and performs set-up for events.
- Operates a variety of hand and power tools.
- Inspects buildings and facilities for repair and maintenance needs.
- Repairs and maintains plumbing systems.
- Makes carpentry repairs.
- Repairs and maintains mechanical equipment.
- Orders building maintenance materials and supplies.
- Performs custodial maintenance duties; cleans and disinfects restrooms; mops, vacuums, strips, and waxes floors; empties trash receptacles; mixes cleaning chemicals.
- Operates city vehicles, forklifts, and scissor lifts.
- Performs minor electrical repairs.
- Performs painting and drywall repair.
- Maintains and repairs sprinkler systems.
- Monitors climate control equipment.
- Operates heavy equipment as needed.
- Assists with snow removal operations.
- Works varying shift as needed, including days, nights, weekends, and/or split shifts.
- Assists at all city facilities, including the Corn Palace as needed.
- Performs related duties.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- Knowledge of the standard practices, methods, materials, and tools of general building maintenance.
- Knowledge of plumbing, HVAC, and electrical system maintenance and repair principles.
- Knowledge of carpentry construction and repair principles.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local building codes and safety regulations.

- The work consists of related technical maintenance and repair duties. The variety of tasks to be performed contributes to the complexity of the work.
- The purpose of this position is to participate in the repair and maintenance of the library. Successful performance helps ensure the provision of safe and well-maintained facilities.

- Contacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
- The work is typically performed indoors and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to a high school diploma.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid CDL issued by the State of South Dakota for the type of vehicle or equipment operated may be required.
